The swimming city

Venice is more than a city for lovers. At least that's what I thought when me and my friend booked a flight down to that city in North Italy. Well we were right. However, when we two girls took the gondola or where out for dinner in a romantic restaurant, we ended up being asked if we were lesbian. Don't know why people in Venice kept asking us that. Mostly other tourists seemed to be very interested in our sexual orientation. First of course we found it funny, but after a few days it kind of got on our nerves. But the „swimming city“ itself was worth it – and is worth a lot more complication than just annoying comments. Venice was built on wood piles directly in the water, for those who might not know that. Most impressing was the San Marco Square. You feel taken back to middleage when you walk over the square which is surrounded by a lot of old buildings, a clock tower and of course the San Marco church which has quite a unique look with its diverse cupolas and explicit decoration. At phototravels.net you can find some nice pictures of Venice, to give you an impression of the town. Almost every street has some marvellous attraction. And there are thousands of shops with all sort of clothes, shoes and handbags. Of course I coudn't come to Venice without buying a stylish handbag made of leather. After our shopping tour through Venice our feet hurt like hell. So our next stop was a pharmacy to get blister pads. For my next vacation in Venice I will bring more comfortable shoes and three packages of blister pads I think.

We were in Venice for summer vacation, so it was quite hot but totally tolerable. There is nothing better than sitting in a gondola in the afternoon sun and shipping through the canals. The only problem with the time we chose for our vacation was the mass of other tourists. The city seemed to be abandoned by Italians, apart from the souvenir shop owners. Chinese, Japanese, Germans, French, the whole world seemed to have left their home to come to Venice during summer. We wouldn't have been surprised to see a report on television that whole nations were uninhabitated. Therefore it was hard to find an accomodation. Anyway, we found some free rooms at casamundo.

The most important thing you have to do in Venice is of course to try the FOOD. We tried original italien icecream on our first day, and the second, and the third, the fourth, the fifth and two times on the sixth and last day in Venice. You cannot compare any icecream in Britain with it. Italien icecream has an intensive and rich flavour and a very creamy consistence. I think I shall never eat icecream but in Italy ;) ! Of course we also tried pizza and pasta. Actually the pizza in Italy wasn't at all what I was exspecting. We tried two times in different restaurants, and of course it was fresh-made and everything, but could not be sure what you get when you ordered a pizza. For instance, I tried once a pizza proscuitto, but I didn't get ham on it – only bacon. And I don't like bacon at all. So if you ever try pizza in Italy be prepared to get something different to what you are used to. After a stay in a nice restaurant with a good glass of wine there is one thing you should do – take a walk through Venice by night. On http://www.phototravels.net/venice/venice-dark.html you can get an impression of the nightly atmosphere. Of course you have to be careful not to be robbed, but then, thieves are everywhere, everytime in Venice, day and night, like in other metropolises.

You can call me Nerual. It's my favourite nickname. I got it from my best friend – yes the same who is supposed to be my lover. It's actually a quite funny story how I got that name, but I am going to tell that the next time. Me and my friend already plan to visit Venice again - for carnival. Maybe we are even going to dress up as lovers.
